Uttar Pradesh: DGP Rajiv Krishna Stresses Respect for Media Persons; Demand for Journalist Protection Law Intensifies

Lucknow,

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: Newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh, Rajiv Krishna, has issued clear and strict instructions to officials from the police headquarters in Lucknow, urging them to treat media personnel with utmost respect. The DGP has directed all police officers not to harass media persons under any circumstances, to listen to their concerns seriously, and to honor them. These directives come at a time when complaints of attacks on journalists and improper treatment against them have been on the rise.
DGP Rajiv Krishna’s initiative is being viewed as a positive step in media circles. In his statement, he clearly stated, “The media plays a vital role in building and shaping the nation.” He also warned officials that strict disciplinary action would be taken against anyone who insults or mistreats media personnel.
In this context, the DGP also appealed to the media for cooperation. He requested journalists to thoroughly verify facts before publishing any news and to share only accurate information. He believes that cooperation between the police and the media can successfully thwart the intentions of criminals. The DGP specifically emphasized that “the media’s role in uncovering any incident is extremely crucial.”
In his address, the DGP also advised police officials to treat good and law-abiding citizens with cordiality and respect, while dealing strictly with criminals. The primary objective of these directives is to re-establish public trust in the police force in Uttar Pradesh and to make them feel safe and relieved.
Demand for Journalist Protection Law Rises
However, despite these positive directives from the DGP, A.K. Bindusar, founder of the Indian Media Foundation and convener of the International Media Army, has once again raised a significant and long-pending demand on this occasion. Bindusar wholeheartedly praised the DGP’s statement, calling it a welcome step, but he clarified that mere instructions cannot ensure the safety of journalists.
A.K. Bindusar strongly demanded the immediate implementation of a “Journalist Protection Law” across Uttar Pradesh and the entire country. In his statement, he asserted, “Until the Journalist Protection Law is effectively implemented, it will not be fair to assume that journalists are safe.” Bindusar emphasized the necessity of this law, citing attacks on journalists, threats, and the challenges they face while performing their duties.
His demand has once again ignited the debate surrounding journalists’ safety. Despite the DGP’s media-friendly directives, journalists on the ground often face serious challenges, including physical assaults, defamation lawsuits, and threats. A.K. Bindusar’s demand highlights these realities and indicates that mere instructions for good behavior are not enough; providing a legal safety net for journalists is also extremely essential. Central and state governments need to seriously consider this issue to ensure that the fourth pillar of democracy can function without any fear or pressure.
