‘Super Spy’ Parag Jain’s New Journey
According to information received, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government on Saturday appointed Parag Jain, a 1989-batch IPS officer from the Punjab cadre, as the new Chief of RAW. He will assume charge as RAW Chief for a period of two years starting July 1st, replacing the current chief Ravi Sinha, whose term concludes on June 30th. RAW is India’s premier intelligence agency responsible for conducting intelligence operations outside the country.
Key Role in ‘Operation Sindoor’ and the Fusion of HUMINT-TECHINT
Parag Jain, known as a ‘super spy’ in power corridors and intelligence circles, brings extensive experience in both Human Intelligence (HUMINT) and Technical Intelligence (TECHINT) to RAW. Throughout his career, he has effectively combined these two types of intelligence to play a crucial role in several high-risk operations.
His most notable contribution in recent years was during Operation Sindoor, where the accurate intelligence gathered under his leadership enabled targeted missile strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Officials state that while the missile attacks may have taken only a few minutes, their precision was possible due to years of hard work and network establishment on the ground.
Jain’s extensive ground experience in Jammu and Kashmir, one of India’s most challenging security theaters, also worked in his favor. Given the volatile global environment, this experience will prove extremely useful for him as the head of RAW.
A Prudent and Experienced Leader
Senior officials describe Parag Jain as organized and discreet. He has held several important roles throughout his career. He was promoted to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) in Punjab on January 1, 2021, although he was serving on central deputation at the time. He was also listed for an equivalent central DGP post, underscoring his credentials within the national intelligence framework. Jain has previously represented India in Canada and Sri Lanka.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his name on June 28th, ending speculation about Ravi Sinha’s successor. Ravi Sinha’s tenure was considered relatively low-profile. With Parag Jain’s appointment, it is expected that RAW will reach new heights and further strengthen the country’s external security.
