Demand for ‘Media Centers’ in Police Stations for Journalists, Social Workers, and Citizens

New Delhi, June 2, 2025 –
Responding to the increasing harassment of journalists and social workers in government offices, especially police stations across the country, the Bhartiya Media Foundation has launched a significant initiative. The foundation has vehemently demanded that the central and state governments immediately establish ‘Media Centers’ in all police stations. The primary objective of this demand is not only to ensure the safety of journalists and social workers but also to ensure that every citizen receives justice. This would allow victims, when submitting their complaints to the police, to also inform the Media Center about their issues.
Akshay Bindusar, founder of the Bhartiya Media Foundation and International Media Army, firmly stated, “The time has come for a Media Center to be established within every police station.” Bindusar emphasized that this step is crucial for ensuring freedom of the press, social justice, and the common person’s right to be heard.
Urgent Appeal for Intervention from Top Leadership
Bindusar has urged the Honorable Prime Minister and Her Excellency the President at the central government level, and the Honorable Chief Ministers and His Excellency the Governors at the state government level, to take immediate action on this crucial demand. He believes that intervention from the highest echelons of power is the only way to achieve a lasting solution to this serious and widespread problem.
Call for a Nationwide Movement
Calling for a nationwide movement, Akshay Bindusar has urged journalists and social workers to unite and raise their voices. He has demanded that all districts immediately begin submitting memorandums regarding this demand to their respective District Magistrates and Police Commissioners. Bindusar stated, “This should become a nationwide movement so that governments are compelled to consider this important issue and the voice of the public can be heard.”
Why Are ‘Media Centers’ Necessary?
In recent times, there have been numerous incidents where journalists have been harassed by government officials or the police due to their reporting, or social workers for raising public interest issues. They are sometimes threatened with false charges or unnecessarily troubled. In these circumstances, the establishment of a ‘Media Center’ within police stations would offer several significant benefits:
Increased Transparency: A Media Center would bring greater transparency to the functioning of police stations, ensuring accountability.
Safety for Journalists and Social Workers: It would provide them with a safe and recognized space while working in police stations, reducing incidents of their harassment.
Access to Justice for Citizens: Victims would be able to directly inform the Media Center about their problems, ensuring their voices are heard more effectively and increasing their chances of receiving justice. This would also put pressure on the police to take complaints seriously.
Smooth Flow of Information: It would establish better coordination between the police and the media, promoting fair and accurate reporting and ensuring that correct information reaches the public.
The Bhartiya Media Foundation’s initiative is a significant step towards strengthening press freedom, social justice, and democratic values. It remains to be seen how seriously the central and state governments consider this demand and when they will take concrete steps in this direction.
